Now we're in the famous February 14, Valentine, for there is no choice but to write a blog about love and friendship. But you'll wonder because they got the title "love and pain" on the very day of love and friendship. Well I think the title is more than adequate if we consider that the Catholic Church recognizes three different saints with this name, and all three were martyred in a very painful.
San Valentin (or at least one of them ...)
Even in an article published in PLoS ONE in 2010 is referred to relationship. Younger, Aron, Parke, Chatterjee and Mackey titled his article "Viewing Pictures of a Romantic Partner Reduces Experimental Pain: Involvement Neural Systems of Reward. " In this article the authors explore the brain basis of the relationship between falling in love and tolerance to pain. Two records are essential for this experiment. First, Master and colleagues found in 2009 that exposure to photographs of the loved reduce experimentally induced pain sensation. Second, several studies have confirmed the initial discovery and Zeki Bartelis 2000 that found that showing pictures of the loved one causes the activation of circuits related to reward systems as well as regions related to affection.
What was done?
The
authors of this study hypothesized that the reduction of pain evoked by viewing pictures of the romantic partner may be associated with activation of central reward processing. To test this hypothesis, 15 subjects examined very much in love whose relationship had not been nine months (I guess that they were still in that stage of infatuation blind!). Subjects were tested under three conditions consisted of seeing pictures of your family, see pictures of someone who made them as attractive as your partner, or do a word association task very absorbent, which has been shown to reduce the perception pain. And most important, subjects had to these tasks while being subjected to a pain scale by starting temperature of no pain to more pain.
That found.
activity during exposure to pictures of the couple while he was subject to pain
The results of functional magnetic resonance imaging confirmed their hypothesis. The photos of the girlfriend, like run the absorbing task, increased pain tolerance, but only to see photos of the couple was associated with activation of reward system. As seen in other blogs, this system includes the activation of the head of the caudate, accumbens, orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala (related to emotions) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.
Well?
Well, this is good news. You know, every time you have a potentially painful situation, it takes a picture of your love of the portfolio, and that will help to take more punishment. Of course one could start thinking about if after sometimes not begin to associate that picture with the pain ... and well, I say Pa'que the possible consequences!.
